Spells and Rituals

Bonfire for Beltane!

Although bonfires tend to be popular in all ancient pagan practices, Beltane is the time of year when it seems the most fitting!  There are many ways to incorporate a Bonfire into your ritual – and it doesn’t even have to be large.  Sure, if you have the space and a nice fire pit, a big Beltane fire is idea – but if not, there are other ways to still bring the feel of a Bonfire into your celebration!

Portable Bonfires

These can be great if you have no permanent fire pit in your backyard or if you want to be able to travel with your fire pit.  They can range in price from under $20 all the way up to over $300 – so there is an option to fit any budget.  You can purchase these at any home improvement store or even make your own! This blog tells you step by step how to make one out of a flower pot!: Create a Fire pit out of Flower Pot!

Please remember that no matter what you decide to do, be safe! Here are some fire tips from a former firefighter to help you have a fun and safe experience: Fire pit safety tips

Indoor Cauldron Fire

If your only option is to be indoors, you can still have the fire experience with an indoor cauldron fire!  You will need the following items

  • Cast-Iron Cauldron – mine is quite small, about 4″ in diameter
  • Epsom Salts – easy to find at the supermarket or pharmacy
  • Rubbing Alcohol – 70% isopropyl (safer) or 90% isopropyl (hotter)
  • Fire-Proof surface, preferably not heat conductive
  • Long Wooden Matches

It is best to use a cast-iron cauldron, since one won’t be too hard to get and it can withstand the heat. Don’t use aluminum, since it sometimes melts or can even catch on fire. Never make an indoor fire in a cauldron that is painted, since burning or even very hot paint will produce dangerous fumes.

Use half (by volume, not weight) alcohol and epsom salts.  Always put the cauldron on a fireproof surface (such as a hearth, other tile surface, metal, etc.) and make sure that the only nearby objects are reasonably heat-resistant. Taper candles, if placed too close, will bend or even melt. Votives in glass holders work better.

Always keep a bucket of water nearby in case things somehow get out of hand. A big box of baking soda also works well. Let the cauldron burn out by itself (how long this takes depends on the size of the cauldron and how much fuel you have put into it), wait till it is cool, and then soak the inside in water to loosen the grayish mass of salts that’s been fused together by the fire. After letting it soak overnight it’s not too hard to clean.

If it’s necessary to put the cauldron out suddenly, covering it with a fireproof lid is the easiest and least-messy method, but be careful not to burn yourself while putting the lid on. One of those big leather work gloves might be good to keep around.

Now that you have a fire, what can you do?

Once you have your fire pit – there are many different ways to incorporate this into your ritual!

  • – Use herbs – you can burn any herbs in your fire pit.  If you are using an indoor fire pit be sure to only burn a very small amount at a time so that you don’t have an out of control fire.
  • – Use lava rocks to help keep your fire going. Click here to see how to use lava rocks.
  • – Fires can symbolize messages moving up to the universe to to deity – they can also symbolize the cleansing or banishing of bad things and bad energies.
  • – Fires can make the start a new phase in life – can be used at the start of a project, symbolizing burning down the old to pave the way for the new.

What are the Nine Sacred Woods?

The nine sacred woods – or nine sacred woods of the bonfire are part of a traditional Celtic ceremony.  They represented the first nine tress in the Celtic calendar and are generally listed in the long version of the Wiccan Rede by Doreen Valiente.  Over the years, this has been changed to a Nine Sacred Herbs incense, which you can make yourself or purchase from us here: Nine Sacred Woods Incense.  This blend is a nice way to add a Celtic touch to any bonfire celebration!

Olive Oil Get Well Spell

I wanted to share this spell with you! I wrote this a long time ago, for Cal Orey’s Book “The Healing Powers of Olive Oil: A Complete Guide to Nature’s Liquid Gold”.  This spell is based on an old Italian spell.  It’s a three day spell but has always been effective for me! You can also find it on pages 41-43 of the book.  Enjoy!

The Olive Oil Healing Spell
by Lady Raven

Use this spell when preparing for surgery or when recovering from it.  This is a three day spell so make sure you have the time to cast it over the next few days.  If casting on someone else or for someone else, be sure to get permission from them first!  This spell uses Olive Oil as the focus of the spell.  Olive oil has been used for centuries as a sacred oil, and was even burned in churches during ancient rituals.  Ruled by the Sun and the element of fire, it imparts strength to overcome all obstacles.  It is also an excellent spell to boost stamina an constitution either before or after major medical procedures.

Tools Needed:

  • One 6-inch red taper candle
  • Rosemary
  • Bay Leaves
  • Olive Oil
  • Picture of person who is ill (or their name written on a piece of paper)
  • Altar Pentacle
  • Mortar and Pestle
  • Incense Burner with Charcoal
  • Cauldron or other fire-safe Container

  • Waxing Moon
  • This is a three-day spell – so be sure to cast it somewhere where your tools will be undisturbed for three days.

  1. Add the Rosemary and Bay to your Mortar and Pestle
  2. Add a few drops of Olive Oil
  3. Create a moist incense (not dripping with oil – but damp with it) by crushing them all together in your mortar and pestle
  4. Take your candle and make 2 marks on it – separating the candle into three equal size portions.
  5. If you wish, you can scribe the candle with runes for healing and strength and/or the person’s name on it. (This can be used for an animal as well)

Casting Your Spell

Day One

  1. Cast your circle, light your charcoal, place some of the incense you created on the burner.  Be sure to keep the incense burning the entire time the candle is lit.
  2. Place the name or picture of the person on your altar Pentacle
  3. Visualize the person in your mind.  Healthy, happy and fully recovered.
  4. Anoint the candle with Olive Oil as you visualize and transfer this healthy image to the candle.
  5. Place the candle on a holder and directly in the center of the pentacle, with the picture or name of the person under it.
  6. Light the candle, watch the flame and feel the strength that the fire brings.
  7. Watch the flame and focus on the person the spell is for, until the candle burns down to the first mark.  Once its burned, snuff it out.
  8. Leave altar undisturbed for the next day.

Day Two

  1. Approximately the same time as during day one, cast your circle and light your charcoal, add incense and keep it burning the entire time the candle is lit.
  2. Once again, light your candle and visualize as you did on day one and watch the flame.
  3. Once it burns down to the second mark, snuff out the candle and leave the altar undisturbed for the final day.

Day Three

  1. Repeat the process from day two, but this time watch the candle burn all the way down.
  2. Once the candle is out, finish your spell by saying “this is my will, so mote it be”

Your spell is complete!

Home Blessing and Cleansing

Cleansing and charging a new or existing home is something everyone should do! Many people ask me how to prepare their new home before they move in.  House blessings are always best done before you move in (if you can get in there the day before you actually move, even better). but it can also work once you get settled in. If you are already moved in, you should keep a regular cycle of home blessing to keep your home humming with positive energy!  Here are some ideas on what you can do.

First Step: Cleanse your space!

Cleanse the area to remove any vibes from previous owners or negative energy left behind.  This can also be done on a current home if you wish.

1) Smudging – this is a traditional practice to many, and it should always be the first step you take when blessing a new or existing home.  Use a smudge stick to cleanse the area (I am a big fan of small white sage smudges).  You should start in the north end of the house, and go counter-clockwise (since you are cleasing), paying special attention to all openings – including windows, doors, vents, drains etc.  If you wish, instead of the smudge, you can use Home Purification Incense, and follow the same process.

2) Salt – you can use salt to cleanse the area as well.  Just use some plain white salt (you can mix in a little frankincense powder or Rosemary with the salt if you wish).  Sprinkle the salt all around the perimeter outside of your home, starting on the north end and moving counter-clockwise once again.

Second Step: Fill it with positive energy!

Once the space is clear and open you need to invite positive energy into your space.  There are some easy and simple ways to do that!

1) Smudging – if you are a big fan of smudging, this a great option.  Use Cedar tips burned in a censer or a cedar smudge stick and smudge the home.  Once again, you want to start on the north side of the home, and this time, you want to move clockwise.  Smudge every corner of every room!

2) Incense – Burn some Home Blessing incense at the center of your home for about 30-45 minutes.  Close all doors and windows and let the smoke permeate the whole house for about 1-2 hours.  After that, you can open doors and windows again.

3) Candle – you can also use a white candle, either a votive or a spell candle.  Charge the candle with positive energy for your home, and burn it at the center of the home.  Let the candle burn completely down.

Third Step: Keep it clean!

Once your home is cleansed and charged, maintain it going forward! There are many ways to do that, if you work with spirits or angels you can dedicate the home to them and make a monthly offering.  You can also use crystals and herbs to maintain the good vibes in your home!

1) Guardians – if you have a guardian spirit, angel, god or totem you work with, you can offer them a monthly offering to watch over your home and keep it safe.  You should offer them a white candle.  It is important to understand that this is an offering, not a request.  This should not be combined with other spells you do during the month with other intents.  This should simply be a candle offering to them, thanking them for their protection and convey your hopes that they will keep watch over you.  You can also burn incense along with the candle if you wish, based on the entity you are working with.  This is the method I myself follow, I burn a white candle for my ancestral spirit every month and some Peaceful Home incense along with it.

2) Incense – if you just wish to maintain high vibrations in the home, you can burn some Peaceful Home incense or Home Blessing incense at the center of your home once a month or every couple of months.  As when you cleansed, make sure that all windows and doors are closed for about 1-2 hours so that the smoke can permeate the whole home.

3) Crystals – You can also use Crystals.  I am a big fan of the crystal sentinels.  You can use our Home Protection Set or make your own set.  Place one cleansed crystal in each room, hidden in a place where people (especially small children and animals) will not be able to get to them.  Be sure to pull all crystals once every moon cycle and re-cleanse them before you put them back out again.  Here are some crystal ideas that I have used in the past that have worked really well – by room:

– Living Room/Family Rooms: Black Obsidian, Smoky Quartz or Tiger’s Eye
– Children’s Rooms and guest rooms: Rose Quartz or Moonstone
– Bathrooms: Citrine, Clear Quartz or Rose Quartz
– Kitchens: Citrine, Tiger’s Eye, Smoky Quartz, Mahogany Obsidian, Rose Quartz
– Garages and Patios: Black Obsidian, Smoky Quartz, Hematite

You can cleanse the stones once a month in salt water, bury them in the earth for 24 hours or use a smudge stick.  Once the stones are cleansed you need to re-charge them through meditation, energy channeling, moonlight, sunlight or with our Crystal Blend Incense.  Once the stones are charged, just place them back out again and they are ready to go for another moon cycle!

I hope these ideas bring you a happy home!

Blessed Be!

Personal Maypole for Beltane

I did this a few years back and it worked great – it can be done in solitary or in small groups. This is a Beltane Celebration.

You will need:

* Small Branches (see below)
* Ribbons of all colors – mainly based on your intent
* Beltane or Fertility incense
* Beltane or Fertility Oil
* 1 Beltane Candle (can be a special Sabbat candle or a plain pink, lavender or yellow candle)
* 1 Pen that can write on the ribbon

1) Walk near your home looking for loose branches. Its important that you use only branches that have falled already from a tree – do not break a branch off a tree. If like me you near maple trees, you will see plenty of branches. Pick one that is reasonably straight. Once you find the branch, say a small prayer of thanks to the tree that shed it.

2) Beltane is a time for fertility and growth. What we plant here we will collect in the spring. Appropriate things for this Sabbat are all things that you wish to increase – find a new job, open a new business, start a family, find new love, close that new deal, etc. All intents like this work well generally. Pick 3 ribbon colors that match your intent. For example, if you decide to look for a new job, pick white, green and yellow. If you are looking for love, pick white, pink and red etc. I always like to add white in for purity and good energy.

Once you are ready – perform your Ritual:

1) Cast your circle as normal

2) Anoint your Beltane candle. Think of the energy of the season – the planting of new things, a time for change – a time when anyone can start over no matter what. A time for new projects, new beginnings etc. Once your candle is properly anointed, place it on your altar at the center of your pentacle.

3) Take your ribbons, and write on each ribbon the things you want to bring into your life. For example, if you choose the ribbons for a new job you can do the following:

– Green – I wish to find a job that will pay me what I need to make to comfortably support myself and my family
– Yellow – I wish to do well in all job interviews I go on
– White – I want a job that will make me happy and satisfied and that will be for my highest good.

If you did the one for new love – you can do the following:

– Red – I wish to find a mate that inspires in me a passion for life, and for each other
– Pink – I wish to find a mate that is not only passionate, but considerate, kind, and who will be a good friend as well as a lover
– White – I wish to find the best relationship for me, that will bring me happiness and joy for my highest good.

You get the idea – once you write on each ribbon what you want, lay the ribbons out in front of you next to your branch.

4) Light your Beltane candle.

5) This is the tricky part – you want to use the wax from the candle to “anchor” the ribbons at the base of the branch. I like to do them one at a time. Once they are fairly secure (they will never be solidly glued – but will be in place enough for you to work), begin brading them down the length of your branch.

6) Take your time and be careful – don’t pull it too tight or it will come apart on you. Once the thread is braided all the way down, secure the end with knotting each ribbon around your branch (now your wand). I also like to take my Beltane candle and use the wax to “seal” both ends of my wand now – over the know at the end and over the start of the ribbons on the bottom.

7) Once done, place your wand on your altar and proceed with your ritual.

8) Cake and Ale

9) Close your circle

You can keep the keep the wand with you all year long. Anytime you wish to cast another spell relating to the same issue, use your wand to help imbue that spell with more energy. Once the year is done – you can choose to keep your wand or burn it and make a new one.

Housewarming Potpourri

Housewarming Potpourri for Cool Autumn Days

Housewarming Potpourri Recipe Blend — Ingredients Mixed Made by My Mother
~By Witch Daughter of Aradia (c)2008

It is the season where it’s sunny, yet cold and rainy sometimes, and a nip of sharpness is in the air as were are heading towards the last of the harvest seasons and into the beginning of (I won’t say it, because I don’t want to think about thathouse white stuff quite yet!) For me, I’m always in the kitchen, I love the custom wood furniture I have in it, I enjoy whipping up hot dinners at night–and boy does it feel good to warm up the apartment from the cold, with the aroma of food and spices in the air.

But even throughout the day when you want to bring a little Autumn in the house, make a little pot of potpouri to heat on the stove. Have a small pot especially for this–do not use this pot again for edible foods! We’ll call it…

The Witches Magickal Cauldron (Not very original, but what can I say? Call it what you will.)

~Dry thin slices of oranges, apples, pomegranates-put them in your magickal cauldron. Oranges give it a citrusy scent, apples are a goddess symbol, and pomegranate for the descent of the goddess to the underworld…

~Add to the dried slices some freshly broken up cinnamon sticks; cinnamon will bring love into the house…

~Add a dash of nutmeg, pumpkin spice, some clove. These are some of the scents for the season…

~With a wooden spoon, stir your concoction slowly deosil (clockwise) while blending all the ingredients together. Think about all the magickal items you’ve added to your cauldron and what you want it to draw in your home for the upcoming cold season…

~To top it off, shave some orange peals, grate some cinnamon stick, and add about three drops of patchouli essential oil to the batch…

~Slowly fill the cauldron with distilled water until it reaches 3/4 above the ingredients, and put it on the back burner. Turn the burner on MEDIUM, and carefully stir until the water almost comes to a boil…

~Keep careful watch on it until you begin to smell the Magickal essence of the season. Turn the heat on WARM/SIMMER, and leave the cauldron burning throughout the day so it imbues your house. It’s a lovely autumn aroma to smell when your family or guests come in from the chilliness outside…

~Be sure to turn off the stove if you have to leave it unattended, and cover it with a lid after it cools. Don’t forget to add more ingredients of what it may need for more aroma, and make sure to keep the water in there so it doesn’t burn! If it starts getting yucky and begins to mold or smell, make a new batch…

*My mom used to do this (she was a stay-at-home mom while I grew up), and I loved the smell of oranges and cinnamon mixed together. Enjoy yourselves!

NOTE: This “Kitchen Witchery Recipe” is obviously NOT EDIBLE!!!

Blessings of the Mabon/Samhain Season!

Celtic Moon Signs

I thought this was an interesting article – Enjoy!

Written by Kim Rogers-Gallagher

Birch Moon (Dec 24-Jan20) This slender tree is a bit deceptive. It appears fragile and delicate, yet it is capable of living where “hardier” trees cannot. If you’re born under this sign, you, too, may present a rather tender “front” to others, but your inner strength is unwavering, and you’ll lend support gladly to others who rely on you. Purity of thought and a knack for realistic evaluation is also associated with this tree sign, since the whiteness of the birch stands out so clearly, in such striking contrast to the foliage that also lives in its native environment. Your quiet determination to succeed by following a reputable path is the stuff that hero/ines are born with.

Rowan Moon (Jan 21-Feb 17) Sometimes referred to as “the whispering tree”, the rowan tree’s magic was well known among the Celts. Its berry is shaped like a five-pointed star, first of all, the symbol of magical protection against spells, enchantments, and glamours. You, too, are a magical creature, able to use you intuition and higher understanding to both enchant and protect. Trust your insights, and act upon them – even if you’re seen as “unusual” or “unpredictable” by others. Your ability to envision the future is priceless.

Ash Moon (Feb 18-March 17) The ash tree is famous, although anonymous, since it’s the tree from which the Hanged Man is suspended in tarot decks. The roots of the ash penetrate deeply into the earth, and the tree itself is known for its speed of growth. Its energy, then, also builds quickly, but is dispersed just as fast. Born under this sign, you have a “knowing” of the connection between ourselves, our planet, and our universe. You feel the pain and joy of all other creatures, from trees to animals to those humans less fortunate than yourself. This lends a compassion to your personality that’s incomparable.

Alder Moon (March 18-April 14) The alder is amazingly resistant to water. As a result, it was often used in construction under water, from bridges to foundations to stilts for homes located close to rivers. This resistance makes the alder a powerful force in psychic battles. If you were born under this sign, you have tremendous courage in the face of obstacles and the power to win in disputes. Watch for a tendency to create wars where there are none, and be careful not to dissipate your strength through engaging in meaningless debate.

Willow Moon (April 15-May 12) The willow seeks out water, and is often found near streams or above natural underground wells. Like no other, this tree is associated with the Moon, in all her phases – and so symbolizes the change of our feelings and “moods” as time passes. Born under the sign of the willow, you are an instinctive creature – in fact, you often react primarily from your “gut response” rather than on intellectual information. Watch the rhythm of your moods carefully and pay attention to your dreams. Their symbolism will help you navigate throughout life.

Hawthorn Moon (May 13-June 9) The hawthorn is a small tree that was often used for hedging, and it has a mixed reputation. Known to be both a sign of fertility and death, it was said to contain the knowledge of both reproduction and transformation. Both of these processes take time – and if you were born under the sign of the hawthorn, you have an innate understanding of both the importance of process and the necessity for change. Your challenge is to use that understanding to guide you when undertaking new starts – don’t rush. Wait, and prepare carefully.

Oak Moon (June 10-July 7) The oak tree endures what other cannot. It remains strong through challenges, and is known for being almost immortal, as is often attested to by its long life and ability to survive fire, lightning strikes, and devastation. If you were born under this sign, you have the strength of character and purpose to endure, too – on matter what your challenges. Direct your energies wisely, make your your risks are well-calculated, and you’ll overcome whatever seemingly “impossible” quests are sent to you.

Holly Moon (July 8-Aug 4) Hollywood was used by the ancients in the construction of spearshafts, and as the spiny leaves show, its well prepared for battle. A symbol of firmness and masculine energy, the holly endows those born under its sign with an equally well-prepared nature. you have a strong connection to the earth, amazing physical strength, and the ability to direct your energy in a balanced even flow. this stability gives you a generosity of spirit ad a very matter-of-fact solidness that others will respect, admire, and rely on. Before you engage in any battle, look inside for understanding and respect for your opponents.

Hazel Moon (Aug 5-Sept 1) The hazel produces its nuts in fall, after having spent the year building the inner strength to protect them. The shell of this nut is so hard, in fact, and contains its treasure so well, that is was the inspiration for the phrase “in a nutshell.” Born under the sign of the hazel tree, you also have an inner treasure to offer – the fruits of you knowledge. Your wisdom and ability to communicate ideas make you capable of transforming the thoughts and opinions of others. Be careful how you wield your word-wizardry.

Vine Moon (Sept 2-Sept 29) Vines traditionally carry fruit, the most famous of which is the grape, used to make wine, that magical elixir that’s known for its ability to dissolve the boundaries between us, allow us to mingle more easily, and relax with others. You, the, are a born socializer, with keen abilities to restore balance to unhappy or unfair situations. Your instinct makes you amazingly perceptive with regard to the motives of others, and your charm is irresistible. Trust this instinct, and form relationships that will last. Don’t be afraid to spend some time alone occasionally – sometimes our own company is the best.

Ivy Moon (Sept 30-Oct 27) Ivy travels everywhere – it spreads happily and thrives in many places where no other greenery could survive. Its determination to reach through obstacles toward light and nourishment is well known, too. If you were born under this tree sign, your networking abilities will further both your personal goals and the purposes of your “cause” – whatever that might be. It’s important that you use this talent to reach out, like the ivy, in a productive way. Don’t allow yourself to bind others to you, or to be bound by guilt, worry, or fear of the future.

Reed Moon (Oct 28-Nov 24) The roots of the reed go deeply into the water from which it takes its nourishment. These roots are the strongest part of the reed, in fact – so its true strength is doubly hidden, both beneath the water and the floor of the pond or lake where it grows. If you were born under this sign, you, too, have secret strength, and perhaps secret motivations, as well. Your challenge is to use your “detective abilities” wisely, not to undermine others or find their weaknesses, but to evolve into a deeply perceptive individual whose wisdom can be used to teach others.

Elder Moon (Nov 25-Dec 23) The elder is a very adaptable tree, quite able to regenerate itself in many ways. It can be rooted from a branch and regrows limbs quickly, allowing it to recover from damage of both natural and unnatural assailants with equal ease. Born under the elder sign, the, you, too are able to live and prosper under any conditions. You will live many “lives” during your time here, and will carry those memories into every new venture. Think of yourself as a gypsy and a student, collecting experience and knowledge so that you may eventually become a great teacher.

Protection Bath

Here’s a quick little ritual you can do protection that has worked pretty well for me in the past!

Tools: A white Candle
Protection bath salts or Herbal Bath
Protection oil
4 pieces of Black Obsidian or 4 pieces of Petrified wood

1) Draw a warm bath – Anoint the candle and charge it with the protection oil

2) Place the candle at the foot of the tub, or on the sink next to the tub.

3) Place the stones on each corner of the tub

4) Take the bath salts, empower them, and drop 2 scoops in the tub right before entering. If you are using an herbal bath, either create a Medium 2-cup infusion or tossing a sachet filled with herbal bath herbs into the bath.

5) Enter the tub and relax in the water – clear your mind of any negative thoughts, think only of the water around you and how great it feel, how it envelops, protects and encases you.

6) Think of the stones around you – see the protection energy from each stone start to glow and expand. It expands slowly until it envelops the entire tub with you in it. Feel safe and protected in it.

7) Focus your mind on your Deity – if you do not have one, focus on the Goddess and God

8) Invite them into the tub with you – ask for their blessing and their protection.

9) Do this for as long as you wish, once you feel enough time has passed, light the candle.

10) Feel the energy from the tub, the wonderfully protective energy, pouring from the tub into the candle. The pure white light of the candle is comforting and as safe as the water in the tub, visualize all of that bright protective energy leaving the tub and entering the candle.

11) Imagine that positive energy expanding from the candle flame out around you, your home, the people you love, and anything you wish to protect.

12) Once you feel all of the energy has been transferred out, snuff the candle out, thank the Gods and empty the tub.

13) Save the candle and stones for your next bath! This is a great ritual to perform just before the full moon!

P.S. – keep in mind this is a ritual not a spa treatment!

“Sweep out evil, sweep out ill, Where I do the Lady’s will. Besom, besom, Lady’s Broom, Sweep out darkness, sweep out doom.
Witch’s broom swift in flight, Cast out darkness, bring in light. Earth be hallow, air be pure, fire burn bright, as water cures.
A sacred bridge this site shall be, As I will, so mote it be.”

Pick up the athame and draw an invoking pentagram in the air above the altar. Replace the athame and say this invocation:

“Blessed Be, Instruments of Light, Tools now of magick with power and might.”

Hold your hand over the water and salt and pass your hand over the element 3 times to banish, and then hold your hand steady to bless. Visualize a sparkling light surrounding and infusing the element while reciting:

“Element of (Earth, Water), I cleanse and consecrate thee,
in the names of the Lord and Lady.
I bring their blessings upon you now.
So mote it be.”

Pour the consecrated salt into the consecrated water. Light the red working candle, cleanse and consecrate the candle (fire) as done above while reciting:
“Element of (Fire), I cleanse and consecrate thee,
in the names of the Lord and Lady.
I bring their blessings upon you now.
So mote it be.”
Use the consecrated fire it to light the incense. Then cleanse and consecrate the smoke from the incense (air) as done above while reciting:
“Element of (Air), I cleanse and consecrate thee,
in the names of the Lord and Lady.
I bring their blessings upon you now.
So mote it be.”
Take the water/salt and go once deosil (clockwise) around the circle. While walking the circle disperse the elements using an asperger or sprigs of herbs. Recite:

“Powers of Water and Earth this circle grace. Purify, cleanse, and bless this space.”

Take up the incense and go once deosil (clockwise) around the circle. While walking the circle disperse the elements using a fan or feathers. Recite:

“Powers of Fire and Air this circle grace. Purify, cleanse, and bless this space.”

Face east. Hold your athamé out at waist level. Walk deosil (clockwise) thrice around the circle perimeter charging it with this chant as you visualize the energy coming from your athame to create the circle. Recite one verse for each of the three circles:

Maiden, cast your circle white, Weave a web of healing light.
Round and Round the Circle’s Cast, Joining Present, Future and Past

Mother, cast your circle red, Weave the strands of family threads.
This Sacred Space shall now be Bound, As I cast this Circle Round.

Old Crone, cast your circle black, Weave the wisdom that we lack.
Thrice is the Circle cast this Night/Day and now begins my Magick Rite/Way.

Once the circle has been cast, salute in the following way:

Take up athame and point it to the sky, while saying, “As above…”

Then lower athame to point it at the ground, while saying, “So below.”

Starting in the East and moving deosil around to the North, light the corresponding elemental candle, and then invoke the quarter:

“Hail Mighty Ones of the Eastern Tower. Guard this circle with your power.
Powers of Air weave the round, Between the worlds the power bound.
Till I send it at the last, Guardians keep it strong and fast.”

“Hail Mighty Ones of the Southern Tower. Guard this circle with your power.
Powers of Fire weave the round, Between the worlds the power bound.
Till I send it at the last, Guardians keep it strong and fast.”

“Hail Mighty Ones of the Western Tower. Guard this circle with your power.
Powers of Water weave the round, Between the worlds the power bound.
Till I send it at the last, Guardians keep it strong and fast.”

“Hail Mighty Ones of the Northern Tower. Guard this circle with your power.
Powers of Earth weave the round, Between the worlds the power bound.
Till I send it at the last, Guardians keep it strong and fast.”

Light the gold God candle:

“I call to the God. Spark of the Spirit Eternal,
Lord of the Wild Hunt, Judge of Gods and Men.
Shining God of the Sun’s rays, Who walks with me through all my days,
Into my circle, I invoke you, To bless and guide all that I do.
Hail and welcome.”

Light the silver Goddess candle:

“I call to the Goddess. Beauty of the Green Earth,
White Moon among the Stars, Mysteries of the Waters.
Shimmering Goddess of the Moon’s light, Who guides me through the dark of night,
Into my circle, I invoke you. To bless and guide all that I do.
Hail and welcome.”

Pour some wine into the libation dish and say, “To the Lord and Lady!”

Fill the altar goblet with wine. Hold up the altar goblet and say, “I drink to the God and Goddess.”

Take a sip from the goblet, and say, “Blessed Be.”

Insert optional ritual for sabbat or intended spell work here.

Take up the plate with the cakes and say “May I never hunger.” Take a bite, and then say,“Blessed Be.”

Take up the wine and say “May I never thirst.” Take a sip of the wine and and then say,“Blessed Be.”

Give thanks for one thing that you are thankful for, and request assistance for one thing that you are in need of.

Starting in the North, and moving widdershins around the circle to the East, go to each quarter and say the following release then extinguish the elemental candle:

“To all those in the Northern sphere, I release you now, depart from here.
I give thanks to all of thee. Depart in peace, and blessed be.”

“To all those in the Western sphere, I release you now, depart from here.
I give thanks to all of thee. Depart in peace, and blessed be.”

“To all those in the Southern sphere, I release you now, depart from here.
I give thanks to all of thee. Depart in peace, and blessed be.”

“To all those in the Eastern sphere, I release you now, depart from here.
I give thanks to all of thee. Depart in peace, and blessed be.”

Say: “I give thanks to the God for guarding my circle and joining my rite. Hail and farewell.”

Extinguish the gold candle.

Say: “I give thanks to the Goddess for guarding my circle and joining my rite. Hail and farewell.”

Extinguish the silver candle.

Take the Athamé or Wand and retract the energy of the circle back into yourself moving widdershins beginning in the north around to the east using the following chant:

“Circle Round, now be Unbound as I make my way around.
I now Dissolve this Sacred Space and send all Powers back to place.

Circle Round, now be Unbound as I make my way around.
Stay if you can, Go if you must, with Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.

Circle Round, now be Unbound as I make my way around.
My Work is finished for the Night/Day and now I End my Magick Rite/Way.”

Once the circle is closed, say the following salute:

“The circle is open, but unbroken.”

New Moon Ritual

Special tools:

  • cedar or sage smudging wand
  • white candle

Cast the circle

Use the smudging wand to purify the space as you move around the circle.

Invocation to the Goddess

(ring bell with arms in Goddess position, arms in a V above your head)
Great Hecate
Queen of the Underworld
Protectress of all Wicca
It is my will on this night of the new moon
to overcome my shadows
and bring about change
I invite you to my circle to assist and protect me in my rite.

Invocation to the God

(hold athame with your hands in the God position, crossed over your chest)
Great Anubis,
God of Protection
It is my will on this night of the new moon
to overcome my shadows
to bring about change
I invite you to my circle
to assist me and protect me in my rite.

Statement of intent

Dark is the night as I reach this turning point
Here is a time of death, yet a time of rebirth.
Endings and beginnings
Ebbings and flowings
A journey done and a journey yet to start.
As the wheel turns, I see birth, death and rebirth
and I know that every end is a beginning.

Remember a time in your life when you were miserable, depressed and felt like you couldn’t go on.

Let the painful memories overtake you, feeling yourself weaken and become frightened. Put yourself back in that pain-filled time in your life.

As you meditate on that time, sink down the floor and curl up in an embryonic position.
You are completely obsessed by pain and depression. The shadows around you lengthen
and darkness spreads.

Then! Arise!

Light your white candle and hold it high overhead.

In darkness, there is light!
I feel energy and life returning to me!
I feel my heartbeat strong
I feel the power of the universe and the power of the Goddess and God within me.
Pass the candle over your body, tuning in completely with the light, feeling its power heal and protect you.

Allow its rays to completely penetrate your being, healing and cleansing you.
As you are doing this, chant

Let the light cast out all darkness
Cakes and wine
Thank the God and Goddess for their presence
Close the circle

Cunningham’s Full Moon Ritual

By Scott Cunningham

Perform this ritual at night in view of the Full Moon if possible. If not, fill a cauldron with water and place a piece of silver in it.

Cast the circle and invoke the Goddess and God and anyone else you chose to invoke.

Gaze at the moon or your “moon” in your cauldron. Feel its cool Goddess energy wash you with power and love. Say these words.

Wondrous Lady of the Moon
You who greets the dark with silvered kisses
Mistress of the night and all magicks,
who rides the clouds in blackened skies
and spills light upon cold Earth.
Oh Lunar Goddess
Crescent one
Shadow maker and shadow breaker,
Revealer of mysteries past and present,
Puller of seas and ruler of women
All-wise Lunar Mother
I greet your celestial jewel
at the waxing of its powers
with a rite in Your honor
I pray by the moon
I pray by the moon
I pray by the moon

Continue chanting “I pray by the moon” while visualizing the goddess.

Now is the time to work magick or meditation. Crystal scrying is particularly recommended (you can use the silver in the cauldron for this).

Enjoy a simple feast. Thank the Goddess and God and release the circle.

Wish Magick

By Gerina Dunwich

With the exception of love-magick, wish-magick is perhaps the most popular form of white magick practiced in modern times. it is relatively easy to perform, and can be as simple as wishing on a star, breaking a wishbone, or dropping a coin into a fountain or wishing well.

Many magically minded folks firmly believe in the power of the seven-knob candle (or “wish-candle” as it is sometimes called) to make wishes come true. It is a magickal tool especially popular among practitioners of hoodoo folk magick in the southern regions of the United States.

Seven knob candles are easily obtainable in most occult supply shops and are available in a variety of colors. When used correctly, they can work powerful magick, but be careful what you wish for, as the old expression goes, because you just might get it! If you do not have a 7 knob candle, you can always use a regular taper candle and mark 7 knots on it.

To perform the following wishing spell, you will need a blue seven-knob candle, myrrh oil, and a consecrated athame. Write your wish on each of the seven knobs of the candle. Anoint the candle with the myrrh oil and say:

I consecrate and bless this candle
in the divine name of the Goddess
Let all negativity and hindrance
be cast forth hencefrom.

Pick up your athame with your right hand. Place the flat side of the blade on top of the candle and envision magickal energy as a white light flowing from your body through the athame and into the candle. When you begin to actually feel the energy flowing say;

I charge thee now
With magickal power
In the divine name of the Goddess

Charge the candle for at least five minutes, return the athame to the altar, and then light the top knob of the wish candle, Say the following incantation seven times;

Seven magick knobs of blue
Make this wish of mine come true.

As the candle burns, concentrate upon the thing you desire and visualize yourself already in possession of it. Extinguish the candle after the first knob has burned down, and repeat the entire spell for the next six nights in a row, burning only one knob of the candle each time.

* 5 new coins in each denomination (pennies, dimes etc.)
* 5 each of the following spices/seeds:
* Dried corn
* Sesame seeds
* Cinnamon sticks
* Cloves
* Allspice

Place coins and spices in a glass bottle (an empty spice bottle works well). Shake for several minutes to combine the ingredients. While shaking, repeat the following: “Silver and spices, Copper and grain, I need to increase my money gain.” Keep the bottle near where you usually store your purse or wallet.

When to do this spell:

For best results, do this spell on a Thursday during the waxing moon phase.

Tip about the coins:

A Spell to Ease a Broken Heart

By John Shaman

Tools Needed

(be sure to charge them all before you begin):

strawberry tea (one bag)
Small wand or stick from a willow tree
sea salt
2 pink candles
a mirror
one pink drawstring bag
one quartz crystal
a copper penny
1 teaspoon dried jasmine
1 teaspoon orris-root powder
1 tsp. strawberry leaves
1 teaspoon yarrow
10 plus drops apple-blossom oil or peach oil
10 plus drops strawberry oil
a bowl made of china or crystal that is special to you

On a Friday morning or evening (the day sacred to Venus) take a bath in sea salt in the light of a pink candle. As you dry off and dress, sip the strawberry tea. Use a dab of strawberry oil as perfume or cologne. Apply makeup or groom yourself to look your best. Cast a circle with the willow wand around a table the other ingredients. Light the second pink candle. Mix all oils and herbs in the bowl. While you stir look at yourself in the mirror and say aloud:

“Oh, Great Mother Goddess, enclose me in your loving arms and nurture and bring forth
the Goddess within me.”

Gaze deeply into the mirror after you have finished mixing the ingredients and say aloud,

“I represent the Great Goddess, Mother of all things. I shine in the light of the Golden Wings of Isis. All that is great and loving only belongs to me.”

Then put half the mixture in the pink bag and add the penny and crystal. Carry it with you always [or until you find another love]. Leave the other half of the potion in the bowl, out in a room where you will smell the fragrance. Repeat this ritual every Friday if necessary.

Needless to say, you should replace the goddess name with one that you attune to.

Soap Banishing Spell

Here is a little spell I wrote for helping you to get through a difficult time or to break bad habits.  This spell can also easily be modified for most other intents.

What you will need:
1) Melt and Pour Soap – you can get this at any craft store:

2) Soap Molds: They don’t have to be fancy or big.  You can also get this any craft store and they are generally not expensive.  I recommend a small mold as you want your soap to last no more than 30 days if possible:

3) Coloring – you can either use food coloring or soap coloring.  If you decide to get soap dyes (which can also be bought at any craft store) make sure they are safe to use on the skin or you will have a reaction.

4) Gemstone – since we are creating this spell for banishing – I will choose a black obsidian.  But choose the stone based on the intent you select.

5) Oils – I would like to stress that ANY oil you choose to use, MUST be tested on your skin first.  So if you chose to use spell oils or blended oils – make sure they are safe to use on the skin.  Any of our Raven Moonlight blended oils are safe.  Do not use synthetics for this – its really pointless.  If you decide to use Essential Oils, you need to check toxicity before using.  MOST EO are NOT safe to use on the skin.  I recommend using blended oils of some kind – but its up to you.

6) Wooden blending sticks – you can also get them at a craft store:

Prep Work

The prep work for this spell is a little lengthy so stay with me!

1) Melt your soap – I recommend melting only enough soap for 1 bar since you will not need to make more at once.  You can use a double boiler if you have one.  Since I am not that fancy, I use a normal pan, that I fill with water about half-way and then a glass pyrex bowl (Make sure its an oven-safe bowl) that is bigger than the pan itself so it doesn’t fall into the water.  Put the wax inside the bowl and as the water boils it will melt your soap.

2) While the soap is melting, empower your gemstone that you plan to use for your soap.

3) Once the soap is melted, pour it into the mold.   Make sure you use potholder or something – if you used the pyrex as the bowl with the liquid soap will be hot!.

4) Let the soap cool in the mold for about 5 minutes.

5) After about 5 minutes add about 10 drops of blended oils.  If using EO, you will need to look up the appropriate amount since it can vary based on the type of EO.  Also, EO’s are volatile and generally require the soap to be much cooler before adding them or they will evaporate when in contact with the liquid soap.

6) Add a few drops of the colorant – generally I add about 5-6 drops depending on how strong it is.

7) Use the wooden stick to swirl the oils and colorant in your soap.  I like to make a swirl pattern – if you want to mix it in really good you can do that.  The color will be uneven – its supposed to be like that.

8) Once the colorant and the oils are added, let it sit for about 10 minutes or so.

9) Add the gemstone in – hopefully the soap will not be as soft at this point – you want the stone to be small enough so that it won’t sink to the bottom of the mold.

10) Let the soap cool – should be completely cool in about an hour or so – sometimes less depending on the type of melt and pour soap used.

Casting the Spell

I recommend creating the soap and casting the spell on the same day.  The best time for this is the day of or after the full moon.

1) Cast your circle as normal.

2) During the spell work portion of your circle, take the soap you created and empower it.  For a banishment spell – think of the habit you are trying to break – have that thought firmly in your mind – visualize yourself completely free of this habit.  Once you have that, anoint the soap bar with the same oil you used in the soap.  While you anoint it pass the energy you raised from your visualization into the soap bar.  You can meditate with the soap bar for a little if you feel the need to do that.

3) Close your circle as normal.

4) Use that soap in your bath everyday for the next entire moon cycle.  As your use the soap visualize yourself free of the habit you are breaking at the start of your bath and then bathe as normal.  Use the soap until its gone – hopefully once it is gone, your bad habit will be gone as well!!

Star Anise Spell to Open your Third eye Chakra

This is a very simple and easy spell – best done in the New Moon or Wanning Moon phase:

You will need:

* 1 Star anise pod (preferably one that has all of its little arms – but a broke one will work too)
* 1 Purple spell candle (you can use white in a pinch)
* 1 Anointing Oil for your candle – you can use any of the following: Moon oil, Water Oil, Sandalwood, Lemongrass, Anise, Myrrth or Orange – any of those will work – if you don’t have any of that, plain old olive oil will work too.
Do not use incense of any type. It will interfere with the spell!

Casting the Spell

1) Cast your Circle as normal

2) Sit in the center of your circle and look at your anise pod. Its little arms stretching out like an open flower (if you don’t have a whole pod, you will have to use extra imagination to picture what that pod would like if it were whole). Take the image of your pod firmly in your mind and close your eyes. Hold the pod tight in your hand and imagine it spinning beautifully.

3) With that image of the spinning pod in your mind, anoint the candle. Feel the energy of the spinning pod moving from your visualization into the candle.

4) Light the candle, close your eyes and imagine the flame of the candle growing brighter and brighter and its gentle glow grows all around you, until you are surrounded by its comforting and protective light.

5) Now bring the image of the spinning pod back into your mind. With your eyes closed, bring the pod up close in the palm of your hand to where you can smell the scent of the Anise. It should be a strong smell. As you take the scent of the Anise in, imagine that your third eye chakra starts to open into a beautiful flower, like the pod did. It starts to spin in sync with the pod. The gentle energy of the candle that surrounds you helps to remove any blockages you have until you can feel the chakra spinning freely and completely open. Do this for as long as you wish.

6) Once you are done, snuff out the candle and save it for the next time you want to do this same spell. This candle can be used multiple times so long as its for the same purpose. Be sure to properly close your circle.

7) You can hold on to the Anise pod and use it as a meditation piece, anytime you need to bring the image of your open and healthy third eye chakra bring it out and let the scent of it guide you. You can also have it close to you anytime you attempt any type of divination. I like to carry it with me in a little plastic bag (so it doesn’t lose its scent) and any time I feel bogged down, I pull it out, take a good sniff of that Anise and I feel my third eye opening right up!

You can do this spell once a month if you wish – I wouldn’t do it any more often than that. You can use the same Anise pod, so long as it still has its scent – the scent of the Anise is very important for this spell so if it has lost the scent, use a new one.

And its that easy! Enjoy!

A Gemstone talisman for Breaking Bad Habits

Spring Cleaning! This is not only done in our material lives, but also in our spiritual ones! Take stock of your life and see what habits need to change.

* Are you trying to get on a budget and can’t seem to do it?
* Are you trying to quit smoking/drinking or breaking any other bad habit?
* Does that diet never quite seem to get off the ground?
* Are you trying to break that procrastination you may have about starting a new project
* Are you trying to remove negative people from your life?
* Do you doubt yourself sometimes, are you trying to be more self-confident?

There are so many things that we do in life that jeopardize our success. Many of them involve bad habits that we get into that may stand in the way or newer more healthier habits forming. Well, this is the perfect time of year to break out of those bad habits and try to create new and more successful habits. All you need is some time and a little piece of Black Obsidian!

Creating a Black Obsidian Crystal talisman

Need – 1 piece of Black Obsidian, paper and pen

1) Place your Black obsidian in a bowl of Salt Water overnight to cleanse it of ay negative influences.

2) When its cleansed, sit down with your stone and pull out your paper and pen and write down exactly what you want to see happen. Which habit do you want to break? Make your wish clear and specific – remember – start with baby steps first and then you can move up to more complicated requests – here is an example:

* If you are trying to lose weight – instead of saying, “I am trying to lose weight”, pick one bad habit you have and work on that first, “I wish to stop snacking on junk food before bed”, or you can say, “I wish to cut down on the number of deserts I eat during the week” or “I want to stop eating so much fast food and if I have to eat fast food I want to make healthier choices”. Be specific

* If you are trying to stay on a budget – instead of saying “I want to save money and be on budget” try, ” I want to stop spending x dollars on starbucks every week”, or ” I want to cut down the number of times I eat out per month to X instead of Z,” or even, “I want to cut down on the number of ‘impulse shopping purchases’ I make every month”.

* If you are trying to banish a negative person from your life – instead of saying “I want to banish Judy from my life,” you may choose instead, “I want to cut down on the number of times a week I speak with Judy” or even “I want to stop seeing Judy every saturday” or something to that effect.

You get the idea – make it specific – the more specific your request is, the better your chances of success.

3) Once your have your intent clearly stated on paper, hold your cleansed black obsidian stone in your hand. Close your hand over it and focus on the stone. Feel the power of the stone – the blackness of it, how it can remove obstacles, it can help you down those bad habits in the darkness of it and pull them out of your life.

4) Once you feel the power of the stone in your hand, read your intent to yourself or out loud while still holding the stone. Feel the stone now charging to the intent that you have chosen, its energy complimenting yours – slowly and peacefully mixing with yours to help you bring about the changes you selected.

5) Once you feel the stone is charged with your intent you are done! Keep the stone close to you – on your person at all times until you feel your bad habit has been broken.

You can always re-use the stone once its accomplished its goal. Just be sure to cleanse it before you use it and charge it. The salt water is an easy way to cleanse it – but you can also smudge it or use a sage spray on it.

I hope this helps! =)

Candle Magic

Candle Magic
By Lady Raven
Candle Magic is probably the simplest type of magic you can perform. It only takes a few minutes to prepare and to complete a candle spell and virtually anyone can do it!Here are some simple steps to completing any candle spell. Candle spells can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. I tend to prefer the simpler methods. The key to making a candle spell work is how much energy you put into it, and how much you believe in the outcome!

The key ingredient in any candle spell is the same as in any other spell: Intent! Know what you want, visualize it in your mind to raise energy, and then finally, burn the candle and release the energy to fulfill your need. You can always add herbs, parchment, ribbons, and so many other things, but you do not NEED any of these things. All you need is a candle, and your intent and your spell can be done!

Important Note About Spellcasting

When casting any type of candle spells, always observe the Wiccan Rede – “And it harm none, do what yee will!”. Never cast a spell to try to “make” someone do something – the spell has a high chance of backfiring on you. Never interfere with another person’s free will!

Some examples (these are by no means all inclusive – but you get the idea!):

Love: Instead of casting a spell for a specific person to come to you, cast one for you to find new love in your life. Don’t focus on the person, focus on the intent!

Money: Instead of focusing on your boss giving you a big raise, focus on finding a better paying job, or having unexpected money from unknown sources coming into your life, or even new projects coming your way!

Studies: Instead of focusing on your teacher giving you a good grade – focus on you doing well on your test, being prepared, knowing the answers!

Protection: if a particular person is bothering you and you feel may cause you harm, first and foremost, contact the authorities – magick is not meant to be used as a replacement for the law or common sense! Second, it is ok to cast a spell to protect yourself from that person, make sure your intent is focused on keep you safe!

If you have questions or need assistance, do not hesitate to contact us!

Charging Candles

I know many stores sell pre-charged candles. I am not a big supporter of that for a few reasons. First, YOU are casting the spell, therefore, YOU are the person that wants this more than anyone. Even if the candle was charged by someone else for you, their energy and power will never equal yours because they don’t want it as bad as you do!

Second, candles that are commercially charged, are generally charged with “generic” intent. When you charge the candle yourself, you can charge it for the specific need you have – making your spell that much more powerful!

Third, you can never really know someone’s intent when they charged that candle, if they had a good day, a bad day, if they are upset with something, or really happy about something else. All of these emotions and feelings will have and effect on the magic you create from that candle – its all energy!

Charge the candle yourself, it only takes a few minutes, you can do it for your specific intent, and you KNOW what feelings and emotions went into it!

Here are a few simple steps to charging a candle for spell use:

1) Choose a candle – any candle will do – tapers, votives, pillars, whatever is your preference. You can select a candle of the color that matches your need, or you can always go with an all-purpse white candle.

Tip: Always keep white candles on hand – I find they are the most useful for any type of magic!

2) Take the candle into your hand, close your eyes and visualize what you want the candle to do. It is important that when you visualize, you picture the event as it already happened. If you want health, picture yourself healthy instead of getting better. If you want love, picture yourself with your new mate, being happy and sharing special moments, instead of finding him. Visualize your need, what it will look like when it actually happens. Do this for as long as you wish.

3) Once you have that clear picture in your mind, and you are being is filled with that need, you are ready to charge the candle.

4) You can choose to carve the name of the person (if you are doing this for someone else) a planet symbol, a zodiac sign, or any other magical sigil on your candle that will symbolize the spell you are about to cast and what you want it to do. This is optional – you don’t have to carve anything if you don’t want to.

5) To dress the candle: with the need clearly pictured in your mind, and filling your being, begin to “dress” or anoint the candle with oil. You can choose one of our many hand-blended oils, or you can use olive oil from your kitchen. The important thing is while doing this, you transfer all of that energy that intent that you just visualized, onto your candle as you dress it. You can picture the energy as a bright light, fire, haze, even smoke – whatever works for you. Visualize and feel the energy entering the candle!

6) Your candle is charged!

Casting a simple Candle spell

You can cast a simple candle spell by using the following:

* Charged Candle (See above)
* Candleholder
* Herbs (optional)
* Gemstones (optional)

1) Place your charged candle in the center of your altar (or table, or dresser). You can choose to surround your candle with herbs that match your intent or with gemstones that also match your need.

Tip: What I have done in the past is place the candle in the center of a pentacle tile and place herbs or stones at each point. You can choose one of our altar tiles for this or even just draw your own pentacle on a piece of paper.

2) Close your eyes and visualize what you want the spell to do. Take as much time as you need doing this.

3) Once you have a strong image your mind, light your candle. You can choose to say an incantation out loud, or not, its up to you. You can choose a chant, write your own words or even borrow words from another spell – the key is for you to say whatever you FEEL is right, and what you FEEL will work for YOU!

4) As you see the candle flame, imagine the energies that you raised, moving out into the universe to accomplish what you asked for.

5) You can do this for as long as you wish – once you feel that the spell is complete, extinguish the candle with a candle snuffer or with your fingers (if you are not used to using your fingers, use a snuffer – always practice safety and care when working with fire and candles!).

Tip: NEVER blow out a candle – it is very disrespectful to the element of Fire – always use a candle snuffer!

6) Leave the room and let the energies you release do their work.

You can also choose to cast the same spell for 3 days – I find it helpful to burn 1/3 of the candle each day as the spell is cast, when I use a taper. Make sure if you choose to do this, that you leave the space where the candle stays for the entire 3 days undisturbed.

Tip: NEVER leave a candle burning unattended!

Working with the Elements

Getting to know the elements if important no matter which path you are on. From Wiccan to Shamanic traditions, all rely on the elements at some point for their work and for their guidance. Take some time to get to know the elements and your work will be richer for it.

If you have never done any type of elemental magick, start slow. Visualizations and meditations are the best way to start. I would recommend working with one element for a full moon cycle before moving on to the next one. Start with Earth and move clockwise – so Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

Here are some tips on how to get started:

1) Find and create talismans or representations of each element. You can use these in meditation or just carry them with you to make you more aware of each element as you encounter it in your daily life. If you decide not to use talismans, just be aware of the presence of each element around you. I have found the following useful:

* Earth, soil and leaves for Earth
* Scents (such as oils, perfumes, etc) or Wind for Air
* Candles or smudges for fire
* Water (that one is obvious) for water.

2) For each element, close your eyes and focus on it. Let your mind wander and see how that element works around you. Open yourself up to that element – feel what it would be like to be that element. When I did this, I found it useful to do the following:

* Earth – Go to a park or a secluded area for Earth – somewhere where you can sit and have direct contact with the earth. If you can have your back to a tree even better. I went to different parks around the city and even brought home some leaves and soil that I used in meditation.

* Air – I picked a very windy day to go out to a very open park. I just stood there and felt the wind rush by me. You can almost lose yourself in if and feel it infuse every element of your being. I also went out in a thunderstorm a few times. Try to spread it out and feel every aspect of Wind – from the most pleasing calm gentle breeze to the strong and scary winds of a storm.

* Fire – this one was tricky. I ended up lighting 9 votives on my altar side by side (in votive holders of course). I meditated in front of it and after a while, I could feel the heat of the fire, the flicker of the flame even with my eyes closed. I recommend not trying to touch it – just reach out with your mind/energy to feel the element close to you. You can do this with candles, if you have access to local festivals you can attend one with a bonfire. This one was the most difficult for me and took the longest.

* Water – I did a herbal bath for this one – if you live by the water, go out into the ocean. If you live by a lake, go for a swim – even a swimming pool can work for this. Go out in a strong rainstorm and feel the water coming down on you. I also watched some rather scary documentaries of rivers overflowing, and the oceans invading beaches during a hurricane.

Each element is pure and raw – it has a range – anything in excess can be dangerous and you should learn this when working with the elements – but just the right amount can work miracles. Earth can give life to the smallest seed, and it will protect anything you place within it. Also it can destroy, when in forms of avalanches and landslides. Air gives us energy, gives us life with every breath, but in excess it can cause cyclones, hurricanes and tornadoes which are scary and can cause damage. Fire can light up our homes in beautiful candles, it helps us cook food which nourishes us but in excess it can burn our house down. Water is another building block of life, it waters plants, it cleanses, it quenches our thirst but in excess in floods and raging seas it can also cause incredible destruction. These forces and powers are awesome and incredible and you can tap into as little or as much as you need. Learn how to connect with them, and you will be sure that you never tap into too much =)

3) Be patient. It will take you varying amounts of time to “connect” or be able to “feel” each of the elements. It took me about a month for earth, about 6 weeks for Air and 6 months for Fire! I feel now that I was born with a connection to water, as it took me no time to “connect” with water – that one was instant. But the point is you may find that you connect with certain elements better than others. This is something only you can know. For years I was told that I had a connection with earth, because I was an earth sign, because I enjoyed working with herbs but in the end, that was not true. It is critical that you start with an open mind. I have seen in the past people want so hard to have a connection with one element over another that they end up blocking their connection to all of the elements because of it. Open yourself up – keep an open mind and you will be amazed at the results.

4) Don’t use spellwork. You are not trying to cast a spell to connect to the element – you are trying to find YOUR connection to each element. This is not like a spell – its personal – its a journey. There is no quick way around it, there is no insta spell that will automatically connect you with the elements. This will take work and most of all time – but the results are well worth the effort.

Some may ask why this is important? The elements exist in every aspect of life and magick. Every spell you ever work will be ruled by one element or another – in every aspect of your daily life you will encounter one element or another. It is important that you build strong relationships with the elements so that you can call on those energies easier whenever you need them. Once you build that connection – all you need to do is close your eyes, focus and there it is!

Remember that the elements are not spirits or beings – they are energies – all you have to do is tap into them and create a window for yourself. What you will find is that once created, that window will exist forever and anytime you need it, you can just open it and find that connection!
